With victories against Uzbekistan and Hong Kong, Vietnam needed just one more point to top their group. However, coach Mai Duc Chung fielded the strongest players in the starting line up, aiming for a direct win.
Vietnam attacked right from the beginning as Jordan defended and waited to counter attacks. Vietnam created three changes in the first 10 minutes, but failed to score.
In the rest of the first half, Vietnam continued to put pressure on Jordan and the start of second half without success. Instead, Vietnam came close to conceding a goal in the 56th minute after a counter attack by Jordan.
It was key striker Huynh Nhu who stepped in for Vietnam, scoring in the 65th and 67th minutes. With this, Nhu has four goals from three games.
Vietnam is now in the third round of Olympic 2020 qualifiers as the top team of group B. In the final round, Vietnam will have to face strong opponents like South Korea, China, North Korea and Australia to win one of two tickets to Tokyo 2020.
The third round will be tough, as eight teams will be divided into two groups and only those in the first and the second spot will advance to the playoffs. Two teams that win in the playoffs will represent Asia at Olympics 2020, along with the host Japan.
