The Spain national team could be fined up to $32,000 if 16-year-old Lamine Yamal plays 90 minutes against Albania at the 2024 Euro due to violations of labor laws in the host country Germany.

Spain have proved themselves a force to be reckoned with at the 2024 Euro, thanks in part to the prodigious winger Lamine Yamal, who is only 16 years and 347 days old.

However, the Royal Spanish Football Federation may violate Germany's child protection laws if they let the player play the full 90 minutes against Albania at 2:00 a.m. on June 25 (9:00 p.m. on June 24 Berlin time), according to U.K. radio Talksport.

Under the host country’s laws, anyone under 18 in the country, regardless of whether they are a German citizen or hold another nationality, is not allowed to work past 8:00 p.m. to prevent labor exploitation and ensure the safety and welfare of minors.

Accrording to German newspaper Bild, the laws allow exceptions until 11:00 p.m. for young athletes. However, this exception includes time for showering and media interviews, making it highly likely that Yamal will break the laws if he plays the entire match against Albania.

The 90-minute official time, together with the 15-minute halftime break, means the final whistle will be blown at the earliest at 10:45 p.m., excluding stoppage time.

Spain have already secured a spot in the Round of 16. If they use Yamal during extra time in knockout stage matches starting at 9:00 p.m., the La Rojas will also be fined, according to Football Espana.

German authorities have notified the La Rojas about the $32,000 fine for any violations, but it is unclear whether the laws will actually be enforced.

Yamal, the youngest player at the Euro, is considered the future of Spanish football. The 16-year-old sensation has impressed with his speed, agility, and maturity. Yamal is currently a key player for Barcelona.

He played a crucial role in Spain’s victories against Croatia and Italy in the group stages. As he is of school-age, Yamal still has homework to do at the Euro.
