Selangor FC has been fined 100,000 Malaysian ringgit (US$24,200) and ordered to play two home matches behind closed doors for fan violence, VVIP misconduct, vandalism and organizational negligence.

The punishment was imposed by the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) after a Malaysia FA Cup match at the MBPJ Stadium on Oct. 29, where fans turned aggressive and a VVIP was seen throwing a water bottle.

Clips of the incident went viral, showing smoke from firecrackers, broken seats and clashes between fans. One clip, which caused public outrage, allegedly showed a drink container being thrown from a VIP area.

In a statement on Saturday, FAM Disciplinary Committee chairman, Datuk Baljit Singh Sidhu, confirmed the incident.

"Selangor FC supporters carried out the burning of firecrackers, and approximately two firecracker explosions were seen and heard being thrown towards the Negri Sembilan FC supporters' seating area," Sidhu said, as quoted by New Straits Times. "From the VVIP seating area, a VVIP from Selangor FC threw a plastic drink container filled with water towards the family members of Negri Sembilan FC players."

FAM said Selangor had failed to comply with its obligations relating to stadium safety, coordination with local authorities and ensuring proper fan management before, during and after the match.

Selangor will have to play behind closed doors in the second leg of the Malaysia FA Cup semifinal against Sabah FC on Nov. 30 and their first FA Cup home match in the next season, besides the monetary fine.

Selangor are the most successful and most decorated club in Malaysia, in terms of titles won with 61 trophies.
