AFC has created a network to connect football lovers across Asia and promote the ongoing Asian Cup.

Tran The Tam is one of 10 Vietnamese participants. When the tournament kicked off in the UAE last Saturday, he was assigned the task of filming fans and taking photos with them.

Tam, who has been living in the UAE for the last four years, is one of three Vietnamese there volunteering for the 2019 AFC Asian Cup UAE Playmakers Program.

It is an initiative by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) to promote the tournament, increase interaction with fans and increase exchanges between the 24 participating nations in the spirit of "Bringing Asia together," the tournament’s slogan.

It has more than 600 ambassadors aged between 14 and 54 from 61 nations.

They are called "playmakers" and receive support from UAE-based embassies, businesses and individuals for raising awareness of the tournament in their communities.

The main task of a playmaker like Tam is to create and promote content about the tournament or receive content from the organizers and promote it on their own social networks.

They also have to participate in exhibitions and cultural exchange programs and attend matches.

Dang Viet Quang, a representative of a unit that works to connect the Vietnamese community in UAE, said the AFC had reached out in June last year to look for volunteers.

Quang, a veteran of six years in the UAE, is a playmaker too.

Pham Xuan Thanh, the third playmaker and a resident of Abu Dhabi, is a photographer and seeks to promote images of Vietnam and its people.

The three have helped Vietnamese fans buy tickets for Vietnam’s matches and provided them with information about the UAE.
