British female boxer, 25, dies of cancer two weeks after wedding

British boxer Georgia O'Connor passed away on May 22 at the age of 25, just two weeks after marrying her partner and following a four-month battle with cancer.

O'Connor, a gold medalist at the 2017 Commonwealth Youth Games, publicly revealed her cancer diagnosis in January. She had previously been diagnosed with ulcerative colitis (UC), a chronic inflammatory bowel disease. Since the beginning of the year, she had shared uplifting updates and photos on her social media, documenting her fight with courage and hope.

In her final Instagram post on May 12, Georgia shared a photo of her wedding ring, writing: "The day I married the love of my life."

According to The Sun, her husband is Adriano, an Italian national.

In an earlier post from February, O'Connor described Adriano as her "superhero," praising him for standing by her side throughout her illness. She shared that he had quit his job to support her full-time, tirelessly researching her condition and exploring every treatment option to give her the best possible chance.

Following her passing, tributes poured in from across the boxing world.

Her promoter, BOXXER, said: "We are heartbroken by the passing of Georgia O’Connor.

"A true warrior inside and outside the ring, the boxing community has lost a talented, courageous and determined young woman far too soon. Georgia was loved, respected and admired by her friends here at BOXXER. Our thoughts are with her loved ones at this difficult time."

England Boxing said: "We’re deeply saddened by the passing of Georgia O’Connor. A gifted boxer and beloved member of the amateur boxing community, she won medals at the Commonwealth Youth Games, Youth Worlds & European Championships. Our thoughts are with her loved ones."

O'Connor turned professional in 2021 and was regarded as one of the U.K.'s most promising female boxing talents. In addition to her boxing career, she was a three-time national taekwondo champion and an undefeated kickboxer. Outside the ring, she enjoyed playing guitar and singing, frequently sharing her musical talents on social media.
