Nguyen Huy Hoang exited the Tokyo Olympics after failing to make it past the first round in the men’s 1,500 m freestyle swimming race.

In group 3 with seven other swimmers, Hoang was in seventh place after the first 100 m, but accelerated in the last 200 m to finish fifth in 15 minutes and 0.24 seconds. Florian Wellbrock of Germany topped the group with a time of 14 minutes and 48.53 seconds.

When group 3 concluded, Hoang was in the top eight athletes overall and in contention to advance. However, when group 4 results were in, five swimmers had better results. Hoang was pushed to 12th overall, bringing the curtains down on 21-year-old swimmer’s Olympics campaign.

The other Vietnamese swimmer at the Olympics, Nguyen Thi Anh Vien, was eliminated Thursday after finishing last in the women’s 800 m freestyle event.

Hoang’s personal best in the 1,500 m freestyle – his favorite category – was 14 minutes and 58.14 seconds, achieved at SEA Games 2019.

Earlier, on Tuesday, Hoang had failed to advance in the 800 m freestyle competition.

Vietnam has just one athlete left in Tokyo now, with track and field athlete Quach Thi Lan competing in the 400 m hurdles Saturday.

Nguyen Huy Hoang finished fifth among seven swimmers in group 3 in Tokyo Olympics 1,500 freestyle swimming competition, July 30, 2021.
