Should I give up my rent house, move back home and commute 100 km to HCMC every day?

My hometown has an express bus that runs to Ho Chi Minh City. If I move back and take the long commute, I can save rent money and enjoy my mother’s home-cooked meals every day.

I am 30 years old, single, and working in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) with a monthly salary of VND15 million (US$610). My company operates five days a week, and I have weekends off.

I'm renting a room for VND3 million a month, paying an extra VND1 million for utility and internet bills. The place is 8 kilometers from my office.

I'm contemplating whether I should continue renting the place or move back to stay with my mother.

My hometown is about 130 kilometers from the HCMC center. Every morning at 4 a.m., an express bus passes by my house, reaching the city by 6:10 a.m. The one-way fare is VND120,000, and the return trip takes around the same time.

Each day, I would spend VND240,000 on bus fares and about VND50,000 on ride-hailing services from the bus station to my office, which means the monthly travel expense would be around VND7.5 million. However, I would save on rent and get to enjoy my mother’s home-cooked meals.

I’m curious if anyone else here commutes over 100 kilometers each day for work. I would greatly appreciate your advice. Thank you!
