Vietnam's stricter traffic rules under Decree 168 have led to better compliance with traffic laws, making drivers be more cautious on the roads.
However, during Tet, common violations persisted, including running red lights, illegal lane changes, riding on sidewalks, and stopping in prohibited areas. According to the Traffic Police Department, officers fined 4,814 drivers and impounded over 2,300 vehicles on Feb. 4, the third day of the Lunar New Year.

These numbers show that many drivers in Vietnam still lack the necessary awareness. Increasing fines for traffic violations is the fastest way to make people follow the laws and prevent future accidents.
Still, some argue that the new penalties under Decree 168 are excessive. But strict enforcement is necessary to deter violations and improve road safety.
Beyond increasing fines, better roads, smarter traffic systems, and legal education could further enhance driving conditions and create a more orderly traffic environment in Vietnam.
