"In the breathtaking final, Vietnam defeated Spain in the tie-break to win the title," German newspaper Rheinische Post wrote. "Vietnam was admired by the audience in Festhalle arena. Based on their journey in the tournament, the Southeast Asian country deserved this title."
Vietnam's 15-14 victory over Spain in the World Three-Cushion Championship for National Teams final on Sunday night (local time) became a hot topic of world billiards forums and mass media. For the first time in history, the two finalists were only one point away from the title in the tie-break. But Tran Quyet Chien and Bao Phuong Vinh were more composed to bring home the first title for Vietnam.
Rheinische Post said only 120 spectators came to Festhalle in Viersen, Germany, for the final match, unable to fill the arena, because host Germany was eliminated early from the group stage. The spectators who came to watch the final were impressed with Vinh's playing style.
"This young man has won the hearts of the spectators with his cheerful demeanor during competition and his adventurous, spectacular moves," the newspaper wrote.
Another German newspaper, Rheinischer Spiegel, also praised Vinh's final blow to victory.
"Vinh knows how to solve the difficult situation with a powerful and accurate shot," Rheinischer Spiegel wrote. "After that, the two Vietnamese players celebrated and so did the spectators."
The newspaper said that at decisive moments, the Spanish players were under pressure. Spain's Ruben Legazpi told VnExpress that he was a bit nervous and missed the opportunity to score the decisive point. Meanwhile, Vinh said that he did not feel nervous at all.
Billiards website Kozoom also said that Vietnam's victory was well-deserved and helped the country capture all world titles, including the World Cup, World Championship and World Cup for National Teams. This astounding achievement was created by Chien and Vinh over the past six months.
Chien, 40, has been Vietnam’s number one player for more than six years and has won the World Cup three times. Vinh, 29, is the reigning World Championship winner.
Korean newspaper Maekyung said it was the great teamwork between Chien and Vinh that brought victory to Vietnam.
"Vietnam has reached the top of the world, thanks to the team spirit of these two players, who took turns to score and help Vietnam lead in the tie-break before Vinh decided the match."
With the latest title, Vietnam became the ninth country to win the World Three-Cushion Championship for National Teams and is currently the defending champion of all three world titles.
