Le Thi Thanh Thuy was reportedly beaten by her partner, a 40-year-old man named Duc, with whom she had lived for nearly a decade. The couple has a 7-year-old child.
According to Thuy, the violence began after she returned home from a meal with colleagues.
Enraged by jealousy, Duc allegedly used his hands, knife handles and belts to assault her. He also confiscated her phone and kept her confined in their home, not allowing her to eat or drink.
Despite her attempts to scream, neighbors did not hear her cries.

Thuy managed to discreetly use a backup phone to send a text message to a friend, who alerted the police. Officers then arrived and rescued her.
Both Thuy and Duc were summoned to the police station for questioning. Thuy was later taken to Kon Tum General Hospital, where she was treated for multiple injuries to her face, legs and back.
During the police investigation, Duc claimed that Thuy had been unfaithful to him but refused to admit it. "In my anger, I slapped her a few times," he said.
