A 50-meter-long blade from a wind turbine in the southern province of Soc Trang broke off and fell onto a shrimp farm during a downpour on Wednesday.

The incident occurred at the Lac Hoa 2 wind farm around 12:30 p.m. amid heavy rain, but no casualties were reported. The wind farm's management quickly shut off power to the affected turbine and secured the area.

Authorities, including the project's main investor, Lac Hoa 2 Wind Power Company, along with experts, are investigating the cause of the failure.

The Lac Hoa 2 wind farm, with a total capacity of 130 MW, was constructed at a cost of VND5.657 trillion ($230.5 million).

This is not the first such incident in the region.

Blades of a wind turbine totaling 100 tons fell off 140 meters and broke into pieces in the nearby Bac Lieu Province in March.

In November 2021, two wind turbine blades also broke off during operations in Vinh Chau Town in Soc Trang.

Soc Trang Province has planned 20 wind power projects with a combined capacity of 1,435 MV, 16 of which have been approved by the provincial People's Committee. Most of these projects are concentrated in Vinh Chau Town.
