Vietnamese leaders have sent their regards to former U.S. president Donald Trump following his injuries from a failed assassination attempt in Pennsylvania, the foreign ministry said Thursday.

"Vietnamese leaders have sent their regards and hope for a complete, speedy recovery for former president Donald Trump. We would also like to take the opportunity to convey our condolences to the families of the victims involved in the incident," spokeswoman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Pham Thu Hang said at a press meet.

Hang was responding to inquiries regarding the failed assassination attempt on Trump during a speech in Butler City, Pennsylvania on July 13.

The suspect, 20-year-old Thomas Matthews Crooks, fired at Trump from a rooftop located about 120 m away from the stage, killing one person and severely injuring two others. It was the first assassination attempt on a candidate for the U.S. presidential election since 1981.

Trump showed up at the Republican National Convention in Wisconsin on July 15 with a bandaged ear. He did not comment on his health.
