A Vietnamese woman was sentenced to 20 years in prison after appealing a death sentence for drug trafficking in Cambodia.

Vietnamese citizen Nguyen Thi Kim Tuyen and Cambodian Kong Rin had been sentenced to death in May 2016 by the Sibu High Court after they were caught trafficking drugs at an airport in 2013, the Borneo Post reported.

Nguyen was convicted of trafficking 2.15 kilograms of meth, and Kong 2.22 kilograms.

But a Federal Court accepted their appeal over their drug trafficking conviction on Tuesday, saying the trial judge of the Sibu High Court had "misdirected himself on the usage of presumption under Section 37 of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952."

Both Nguyen and Kong should be imprisoned for 20 years instead, the court ruled.
