Party General Secretary and State President To Lam and his spouse hosted a red-carpet welcome ceremony for General Secretary of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party (LPRP) Central Committee and President of Laos Thongloun Sisoulith and his spouse in Hanoi on Tuesday morning.

The visit is the second to Vietnam by General Secretary and President Sisoulith since the 11th National LPRP Congress in January 2021, and follows a state visit to Laos by To Lam as President of Vietnam in July 2024. It is a vivid demonstration of the great friendship, special solidarity, and faithful and pure relations between the two Parties, States, and people of Vietnam and Laos.

It takes place at a time when the two Parties and countries are strongly implementing the resolution of each Party and actively preparing for all-level congresses in the lead up to the national Party congresses.

The trip is considered one of the significant milestones in the history of the bilateral ties, helping develop the two countries’ great friendship, special solidarity, and comprehensive cooperation to a new height in an increasingly effective and practical manner to secure prosperity for people in each country.

Following the welcome ceremony, the two leaders held talks at the Party Central Committee headquarters.

Vietnam and Laos established diplomatic relations in 1962. Vietnam is one of the largest investors and commercial partners for Laos, with over 250 investment projects in the country, totaling to $5.5 billion in capital.

Bilateral trade turnover in 2023 reached $1.6 billion. In the first eight months of 2024, the trade turnover between the two countries reached about $1.3 billion. The two sides are implementing the Memorandum of Understanding between the two governments on the development of hydropower projects in Laos and trade between the two countries, in which Vietnam will import about 3,000 MW of electricity from Laos by 2025 and 5,000 MW by 2030.

Vietnam provides Laos with about 1,000 scholarships each year and to date, there are about 14,000 Lao students studying at more than 170 educational institutions in Vietnam.
