Vietnam's daily Covid tally reaches new high at 1,089

The Ministry of Health confirmed 514 new Covid-19 cases Monday night, taking the day's total to 1,089.

HCMC, which has taken over as the pandemic’s epicenter, led the evening tally with 270 cases, followed Binh Duong (114), Dong Thap (62), Tien Giang and Phu Yen (11 each), Khanh Hoa (10), Dong Nai (8), An Giang (6), Binh Phuoc and Ba Ria-Vung Tau (four each), Binh Dinh, Tay Ninh and Bac Giang (three each), Quang Ngai (two), and one each in Bac Ninh, Nghe An and Lam Dong.

In HCMC, 248 cases were detected in quarantine zones and other locked down areas and 22 others are being contact traced.

In the southern province of Binh Duong, 110 cases are related to a company in Thu Dau Mot Town and four are being contact traced.

Eight cases in the Mekong Delta province of Tien Giang are linked to the My Tho fishing port in the eponymous town, two to a bank in the same town and one linked to HCMC’s Binh Dien Market.

Two cases in the southern province of Binh Phuoc are associated with its Binh Dien Market and two others are being contact traced.

The cases in the central province of Binh Dinh Province are being contact traced and as is the one in Nghe An.

All the cases in the provinces of Dong Thap, Phu Yen, Khanh Hoa, Dong Nai, An Giang, Ba Ria-Vung Tau, Tay Ninh, Bac Giang, Quang Ngai and Bac Ninh are those that came into close contact with previously confirmed coronavirus patients.

The latest additions marks Vietnam's daily tally of Covid-19 cases crossing 1,000 for the first time.

The health ministry also announced the discharge of 203 patients Monday evening, taking the total number of recoveries since the beginning of the pandemic to 8,022.

Vietnam's latest Covid wave, which began April 27, has seen 17,543 infections recorded in 55 of the nation's 63 cities and provinces. The most severely hit are HCMC with 6,675 cases and Bac Giang with 5,668.
