Of the new cases, 2,229 were recorded in Ho Chi Minh City, the current national epicenter of the pandemic, taking the city’s total to 18,802 in the latest Covid-19 wave. This is the first time HCMC was recording over 2,000 cases a day.
Most of the new cases were in isolated areas, and authorities are tracing contacts of 415 cases.
In the latest wave starting from April 27, Bac Giang has the second highest number of cases at 5,726, followed by Binh Duong at 1,887 and Bac Ninh at 1,672.
The total number of local cases since April 27 has reached 33,858 in 58 localities.
The national tally since the beginning of the pandemic early last year stands at 37,343 cases as of Wednesday night.
With three Covid-19 deaths Wednesday afternoon, the national death toll has gone up to 135.
Twelve localities have gone 14 days without any new case, while nine have done so for 30 days.
