Vietnam confirmed 7,333 new Covid cases in 38 cities and provinces on Saturday, down 987 from the previous day.

Current epicenter HCMC led the day's tally with 3,930 cases, followed by its neighbors and industrial hubs Binh Duong (882), Dong Nai (709) and Long An (367), the Health Ministry said.

Of the new cases recorded on Saturday, 1,281 were detected in the community while the remaining in quaratine facilities or locked down areas.

The day's number has pushed the tally in the ongoing wave since late April to 196,754.

The number of recoveries since the start of the pandemic increased to 66,637, after 4,305 were announced recovered Saturday.

Over 8.5 million people have received Covid-19 vaccines, but only over 863,000 have been fully vaccinated.

The capital Hanoi of more than 8 million would continue strict social distancing rules that were due to end on Saturday for another two weeks until August 22 after it has detected new clusters at wholesale markets, convenience stores and supermarkets.

Hanoi has in the past two weeks ordered people to stay at home except for essential purposes such as buying food or medications, and halted all non-essential activities.
