Vietnam records 59 more domestic Covid-19 infections

The Health Ministry confirmed 59 new community transmissions Thursday night, raising Vietnam's local Covid-19 infection tally to 6,596 after six weeks.

Bac Giang Province, the epicenter of Vietnam's fourth coronavirus wave, recorded 23 new cases, followed by Ho Chi Minh City (20) and te northern province Bac Ninh (12). Tien Giang in the south and Ha Tinh in the central region recorded two cases each.

All new cases in Bac Giang Province and its neighbor Bac Ninh are linked to clusters at the provinces' industrial parks.

In HCMC, three patients are related to the hotspot at a Christian congregation based in Go Vap District while 17 others are in close contact with previously confirmed Covid-19 patients and all have been already quaratined following contact tracing.

The source of transmission of the two new cases in the Mekong Delta province of Tien Giang remains unclear.

The two patients in Ha Tinh had been isolated after having close contact with previously confirmed Covid-19 patients.

Vietnam recorded a total of 211 local cases of Covid-19 on Thursday. 72 Covid-19 patients were declared free of coronavius the same day, raising total recoveries since the start of the pandemic to 3,708.

Vietnam has been grappling with the new wave since April 27 and so far local infections have been detected in in 39 cities and provinces, including metropolises, industrial hubs and localities housing foreign tech giants.
