The Health Ministry on Sunday night recorded 54 new Covid-19 infections in Hanoi, Da Nang and several northern provinces, raising the infection tally in Vietnam's fourth coronavirus wave to 1,140.

Sunday set a new peak in daily new cases with 187 community transmissions confirmed in the country, marking the highest number since the pandemic broke out in Vietnam in January last year.

The 54 new patients were recorded in Hanoi and northern provinces of Dien Bien, Ha Nam, Hai Duong and Bac Ninh, and the central city of Da Nang.

Bac Ninh Province recorded 24 new cases, all related to previous outbreaks in Mao Dien Commune in Thuan Thanh District and Van Trung Industrial Park in the neighboring Bac Giang Province.

Da Nang City reported 12 new cases, all linked to previous outbreaks.

In Dien Bien Province, five new cases had close contact with previously confirmed patients while the transmission sources of two other cases are still under investigation.

Six new patients in Ha Nam were in close contact with previously confirmed patients and had been already isolated following contact tracing.

The remaining five cases in Hanoi and Hai Duong are all related to previous outbreaks.

Since the new wave broke out on April 27, Vietnam has reported 1,140 new local cases of Covid-19 in 26 cities and provinces.

The country has recorded 4,175 infections since the start of the pandemic, including 2,668 recoveries and 36 deaths.
