An 81-year-old Covid patient has died in Hanoi, becoming Vietnam's 39th coronavirus death and fourth in the ongoing outbreak.

His cause of death was determined to be Covid-19, septic shock, blood sepsis, cirrhosis and diabetes, among others, the Health Ministry said Thursday afternoon.

The man was admitted to the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases for blood sepsis on May 3. He tested positive for the coronavirus on May 11, and was sent to the ICU to be put on ventilators and ECMO.

His condition worsened on Wednesday and he died the same night.

A 64-year-old Covid patient at the hospital died the same day, the health ministry accounced Thursday morning. Her cause of death were septic shock, liver cancer, chronic hepatitis B, hemophagocytic syndrome, leucopenia, and Covid-19 complications.

Vietnam's latest Covid-19 wave has seen 1,722 local cases in 30 cities and provinces since late last month.
