Vietnam records 10,011 more local Covid cases, positive rate drops in HCMC

Vietnam on Sunday recorded 10,011 new local Covid-19 cases, bringing the total coronavirus tally in the ongoing wave to 752,186.

The three localities with the highest numbers of new cases were Ho Chi Minh City with 5,121 cases and its neighboring provinces of Binh Duong with 3,332, and Dong Nai with 746.

A total of 11,477 patients were announced recovered on Sunday, raising the total recoveries since the start of the pandemic to 572,926.

Of more than 210,000 patients in hospitals, 4,321 are severe cases, according to the Health Ministry.

Five months since the new wave hit Vietnam, community infections have been recorded in 62 out of the nation's 63 cities and provinces, with HCMC suffering the most, at 371,660 cases, followed by Binh Duong with 200,196 and Dong Nai with 45,667. The northern province of Cao Bang is the only Covid-free locality.

In the epicenter HCMC, where mass testing has been conducted on recent days to prepare for reopening, the rate of people testing positive has dropped from 0.4 percent on Wednesday to 0.2 percent on Saturday, according to the HCMC Center for Disease Control.

Also on Sunday, the Ministry of Health announced 184 Covid-19 fatalities, including 131 in HCMC and 26 in Binh Duong.

The coronavirus fatalities in Vietnam so far are 18,584, including 18,549 in the fourth wave that broke out in late April.

Over 30 million people have received their first Covid-19 vaccine shots and more than 7.94 million are fully vaccinated.
