Deputy Minister of Information and Communications Pham Duc Long said there are plans to popularize Vietnam’s national domain name ‘.vn’ and make it among the world’s top 20-30.

Speaking at a conference at the Vietnam Internet Network Information Center (VNNIC) in Da Nang on Friday, he said the country needs to narrow the digital gap and make the Internet available to everybody and ensure "no one is left behind."

For this to happen, Vietnam is striving to provide broadband Internet access to every household and smartphone, he said.

The government wants to popularize the ‘.vn’ national domain name to exploit the value of Internet resources and develop the digital economy, he said.

"The domain will reach at least one million and rank in the world’s top 20-30."

The government plans to develop infrastructure, including undersea fiber-optic cables, he said.

The year marks the 25th anniversary of Internet in the country.

It has grown rapidly with a usage rate of 70.3 percent, becoming an essential part of people’s lives and a foundation for the development of the digital economy and society.

Its future is associated with the rise in new technologies such as IoT, cloud computing, AI, Blockchain, 5G, and 6G.
