Vietnam may get 16-17 million Covid-19 vaccine doses this month, either as aid or through commercial contracts, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has said.

The information was revealed from a meeting of the nation's Vaccine Diplomacy Committee on Wednesday. The types of vaccines and their sources have not been specified.

Vietnam has so far received 33 million doses through the global Covax facility, bilateral assistance and commercial contracts signed by the Health Ministry and companies.

It has administered 23.57 million doses, with 3.77 million people being fully vaccinated.

The country plans to obtain 150 million doses to inoculate 70 percent of its 96-million population by April next year.

It has yet to approve any homegrown vaccine.

Since the beginning of the epidemic, Vietnam has recorded 563,676 infections to rank 50th out of 222 countries and territories. It had the world’s 15th largest population last year.

In per capita terms, it ranks 158th, with 5,730 cases per million people.

So far 14,135 people have died for a fatality rate of 2.5 percent.
