Two deputy heads of the Vietnam Golf Association and 14 other businesspeople were detained Wednesday for gambling by playing poker at a 5-star hotel in northern Vinh Phuc Province.

Le Hung Nam and Tran Thanh Tu, deputy heads of the Vietnam Golf Association, along with 14 others, were detained by police of the Ministry of Public Security. Five other people involved in the case are also being investigated for organizing gambling, and one person was handed over to the military for an investigation.

On March 20, Nam, Tu and other businesspeople went to Vinh Phuc to prepare for a golf tournament.

At 8 p.m. the same day, the golfers played poker at a 5-star resort in Vinh Yen Town. At around 11:45 p.m., police busted in the scene and arrested 22 people.

The police said the head organizer of the gambling session was 47-year-old Tran Anh Linh, director of the Tran Le Gia company in HCMC.

The police also found over VND4.6 billion ($195,848) worth of tokens and other relevant documents at the scene.

Poker is approved for play in tournaments by the Bridge and Poker Vietnam Association, which is under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

However, poker tournaments can still be considered gambling if organized spontaneously.
