Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has declared September 8 the day of Vietnamese language appreciation for communities abroad.

The celebration would encourage and appreciate individuals and organizations that contribute to the maintenance and spread of the Vietnamese language abroad, including the use of Vietnamese among families abroad.

It further aims to encourage local governments to add Vietnamese to the curriculum of education facilities hosting Vietnamese students, as well as support universities and research institutions with subjects on the Vietnamese language, making Vietnamese an official language in certain areas.

Annually, an anniversary conference for the appreciation of the Vietnamese language would be held to connect Vietnamese representative entities both inside and outside Vietnam.

A competition would also determine a Vietnamese language ambassador abroad.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs would cooperate with relevant entities to host appreciation events for individuals, families and organizations that have contributed to the maintenance and spread of the Vietnamese language.

Vietnam National University in Hanoi would develop an online information portal for the teaching of Vietnamese to Vietnamese people abroad.

A 2021 report by finance website InsiderMonkey said the Vietnamese language is the 21st most spoken in the world, with over 77 million speakers globally.
