Nine individuals wanted for corruption have been apprehended abroad this year, according to Vietnam’s Central Internal Affairs Committee.

Deputy Committee head Nguyen Huu Dong said at a conference focused on anti-corruption efforts on Wednesday that authorities are continuing to urge fugitives to surrender voluntarily.

Law enforcement agencies are also collaborating internationally to expedite extradition efforts.

Ministry of Public Security spokesman Hoang Anh Tuyen said that a range of strategies is being employed to locate fugitives through diplomatic and law enforcement channels. Each case demands a tailored approach, he noted.

Tuyen specifically urged Nguyen Thi Thanh Nhan, former chairwoman of Advanced International Joint Stock Company (AIC), along with other fugitives, to come forward voluntarily for potential leniency.

Nhan was found guilty of conspiring with government officials to forge tender documents for the purchase of medical equipment for a public hospital in the northern Quang Ninh Province. She had been sentenced to dozens of years in jail for violating regulations on governing bidding leading to serious consequences, bribery related to equipment procurement by a hospital in the southern Dong Nai Province, and for fraud related to sales of medical equipment.

Her cumulative sentence is 30 years in jail, in accordance with Vietnamese law on maximum jail sentences.

AIC was among Vietnam's 500 largest enterprises in 2012, with annual revenues of around VND10 trillion (US$406.75 million). The company operates in various fields including healthcare, education and real estate.

Since August, Vietnam has launched investigations into 734 corruption cases involving 1,681 individuals. Additionally, courts have tried 1,002 corruption cases, implicating 2,703 defendants.
