Nha Trang police Wednesday arrested two men responsible for dozens of street theft cases targeting foreign women.

Vo Van Cuong, 23, and Nguyen Viet Hoang, 19, have been placed under criminal investigation for "stealing properties," a crime punishable by up to three years in jail. Vietnamese law treats theft as a criminal offense if the stolen property’s value exceeds VND2 million ($87).

As Cuong and Hoang drove a motorbike at a fast speed on Hung Vuong Street in Nha Trang, a top tourist destination in the central province of Khanh Hoa, police stopped them.

Cuong sped up further instead, while Hoang, riding pillion, used a pepper spray to resist the police. However, they were captured and taken to the police station.

The duo confessed to the police that they had carried out dozens of robbery cases, preying on foreign tourists, mainly women.

Nha Trang is a top holiday destination in Vietnam, helping to draw 2.33 million foreign tourists to Khanh Hoa in the first 10 months of this year, up 41.5 percent from a year ago. Among them, 1.4 million vistiors were from China, and 333,000 from Russia.
