Two people died on Thursday afternoon after a fire broke out in a 16th-floor apartment in the beach town of Nha Trang in central Vietnam.

The blaze erupted around 4 p.m. in a 50-square-meter unit at a 26-story residential complex on To Hieu Street, located near the beach in Nam Nha Trang Ward of Khanh Hoa Province. The fire reportedly started in the bedroom, where a mattress, blankets, and other flammable items fueled its rapid spread.

Thick black smoke filled the corridor and rose to the upper floors, triggering alarms and forcing panicked residents to evacuate via the staircases. From the street, a large column of smoke was visible rising above the complex, which consists of three towers and over 1,000 apartments.

Le Thanh Hoa, a resident on the 16th floor, said she and her neighbors alerted authorities and fled immediately after seeing flames engulf the nearby unit.

Khanh Hoa Province fire and rescue police deployed 36 officers, two ladder trucks, and three fire engines to the scene. Firefighters accessed the burning unit through a neighboring apartment to contain the spread while guiding residents to safety. The fire was brought under control within 30 minutes.

Nguyen Thanh Ha, Vice Chairman of the Khanh Hoa People’s Committee, confirmed that a man and a woman were killed. Their bodies were discovered in the bedroom, where the fire had caused significant damage.

According to a building management representative, neighbors heard arguing coming from the apartment prior to the fire. Because the door was locked, management staff had to force entry and use portable extinguishers in an initial attempt to fight the blaze.

Police completed their examination of the scene by 8:30 p.m.

The victims’ bodies were transferred to Khanh Hoa General Hospital for autopsies. Authorities have not yet released the identities of the victims or the official cause of the fire.
