China will open the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge on Sept. 28, a megastructure rising 625 meters, as tall as stacking two Eiffel Towers, above the Beipan River, setting a new world record as the highest bridge ever built.

The multi-billion dollar project in Guizhou Province, stretching 2,890 meters with a 1,420-meter main span, will cut down travel time from two hours to two minutes, the Global Times reported.

The bridge is not only the tallest but also the largest-span bridge ever constructed in a mountainous region, according to the Washington Post.

Work began in early 2022 in one of the country’s most challenging terrains, the Huajiang Gorge. Engineers had to contend with sheer cliffs, powerful winds and dizzying heights. To overcome these obstacles, the project deployed cutting-edge technology: China’s BeiDou satellite positioning system for pinpoint accuracy, drones for aerial construction support, Building Information Modeling (BIM) for real-time simulation, smart sensors to track stress and vibration, and new ultra-strong materials designed to withstand decades of strain.

Last month, the bridge passed its toughest test yet, Xinhua reported. A fleet of 96 trucks, weighing a combined 3,300 tons, rumbled across its deck in both static and dynamic load trials. Sensors recorded how the structure flexed under pressure, measuring shifts down to the millimeter. The results gave the green light for public traffic. Engineers say a lightweight arch design trimmed 30% off the bridge’s total weight, making it more stable in high winds.

China already dominates the global league of "bridge superlatives," home to eight of the world’s 10 highest bridges. The previous record holder, the Duge Bridge at 565 meters, also lies in Guizhou.
