A 32-year-old man has been fined VND35 million (US$1,345) and had 10 points deducted from his driver's license for reversing on the Hanoi – Thai Nguyen Expressway in northern Vietnam.

The penalty was issued on Wednesday by the Traffic Police Department of Thai Nguyen Provincial Police.

The incident occurred at 2:50 p.m. on Monday when the driver, operating a four-seat vehicle, missed the exit ramp at the Song Cong interchange in Thai Nguyen Province. Instead of continuing forward, he reversed on the expressway in an attempt to reach the exit.

Although he switched on his hazard lights, the maneuver nearly resulted in a collision with another vehicle approaching from behind. The violation was recorded by a dashcam from a different car.

Under Vietnam's current traffic regulations, each driver's license begins with 12 points. Losing all 12 points results in a driving ban, and offenders must wait at least six months before retaking the driving test.
