According to authorities, Hung failed to maintain a safe speed while driving on a slippery section of National Highway 6 just before midnight on Friday. As a result, the bus slid into the opposite lane and crashed head-on with the oncoming tractor-trailer.
Police conducted alcohol and drug tests on Hung, both of which returned negative results.
The collision caused severe damage to both vehicles. The sleeper bus’s left side was torn off, while the tractor-trailer’s cabin was crushed, trapping the driver inside.
Survivors and passersby spent several minutes using crowbars to pry open the tractor’s cabin in an attempt to rescue the driver and his assistant.
But the driver, Do Xuan Thanh, had died upon released, so as five passengers on the bus.
The tractor assistant and seven other passengers on the sleeper bus sustained injuries.

National Highway 6 is a critical transportation route connecting Hanoi to the northwestern region of Vietnam. The section passing through Yen Chau District, Son La Province, where the accident occured, spans 48 kilometers and consists mainly of two lanes of 8-10 meters wide, with winding curves around hills and mountains.
