Authorities plan to put up a roof over Le Loi Street in HCMC’s District 1 at a cost of VND20-30 billion (US$856,000-1.3 million) to protect pedestrians from the elements.

The city Department of Planning and Architecture has submitted the proposal to the People’s Committee as a measure to improve the bustling shopping street, which has been cleared after years of being blocked for the metro construction.

The street, which runs from the Saigon Opera House to Ben Thanh Market, saw its barriers removed last August but not enough has been done to reboot business activities there, the department said.

Since the large trees that had lined the street were removed for the metro construction, putting up a canopy over the sidewalks would be a good idea, it said.

The roof is expected to be made of corrugated steel and stretch over the sidewalks and four meters over the road on either side.

District 1 also proposes to turn Le Loi into a pedestrians-only street with an eye on tourism.
