A video showing a Hong Kong bus driver asking a passenger to disembark for bringing a durian onboard has gone viral on social media, sparking widespread debate.

The clip, filmed on the lower deck of the bus on Monday, was posted by a woman who recounted how the driver ordered the "durian-carrying passenger to get off," claiming the fruit's strong odor was distracting him while driving, Dimsum Daily reported.

"Who brought the durian needs to get off?" the driver asked.

Reactions from fellow passengers were mixed. Some male passengers defended the fruit, insisting its scent was not offensive. Others disagreed.

One female passenger said, "The driver can't stand it. It's affecting his ability to drive - it's dangerous."

The incident has fueled an online debate.

While some netizens criticized the driver's actions, many supported his decision, arguing that the pungent smell of durian can be nauseating and that the driver had the right to maintain a safe driving environment.

Durian, known for its large size, thorny rind, and distinctive smell, is widely grown in tropical countries such as Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia.

Despite its popularity, the fruit is often banned from public transport, hotels, and enclosed spaces across Asia due to its overpowering odor.
