Passenger bus teeters above ravine as Da Lat's Mimosa Pass collapses

A late-night collapse of Mimosa Pass, a key southern entry route into Da Lat, nearly sent a passenger bus plunging into the ravine below late Wednesday night.

The incident occurred around 11 p.m. when a Phuong Trang passenger bus was traveling through the pass area in the Xuan Huong - Da Lat Ward of Lam Dong Province. A large section of the roadbed had slid into the ravine, creating a massive hole. The bus's front wheel dropped into the edge of the void, leaving the vehicle teetering precariously over the drop.

Poor visibility, heavy rain, and a slippery road surface contributed to the accident. A representative of the ward People's Committee confirmed that only the driver was aboard and managed to escape the bus in time.

Authorities immediately closed Mimosa Pass. The landslide occurred about 1 km from a previous incident earlier that day where a tree had fallen, and it follows another landslide on the pass just two days earlier.

Authorities are now developing a plan to safely tow the bus from the danger zone.

The 11-km Mimosa Pass, part of National Highway 20, is one of Da Lat's main southern gateways, alongside the Prenn and Sacom passes.

In recent days, multiple routes around Da Lat have suffered from repeated damage and landslides: Prenn Pass near Datanla Waterfall has experienced long stretches of erosion, National Highway 20 near the suspension bridge at D’ran Pass has subsided and cracked, Ngoan Muc Pass (National Highway 27) and Khanh Le Pass (National Highway 27C) have also seen landslides, severely hindering travel between Nha Trang and Da Lat.

This series of incidents comes shortly after a separate tragedy late Sunday night, when another Phuong Trang passenger bus traveling on the Khanh Le Pass was crushed by rockslide, resulting in six fatalities.
