While riding a motorbike in Ho Chi Minh City Sunday, a 30-year-old man was struck from behind by a Jeep and went flying nearly two meters into the air.

"The car sped up from behind and hit me so hard I was thrown almost two meters into the air and hit the ground unconscious," Tran Chanh Doan recalled at Trieu An Hospital, still shaken from the crash on Sunday evening.

The accident involving multiple vehicles killed a woman and her daughter, aged 72 and 50. The latter had been riding.

Recounting the events Doan said at around 6 p.m., after finishing work in District 1, he was riding his motorbike home to Long An Province. Amid heavy traffic on Kinh Duong Vuong Street, he heard a series of loud crashes behind him. As he turned to look, a car struck him at high speed.

Doan was thrown into the air before hitting the ground face-first and losing consciousness.

"When I came to, I found myself on the sidewalk, unable to move my limbs, my head spinning. Luckily, I had my helmet on."

Two women lay motionless nearby, blood pooling around them.

Doan was rushed to a hospital nearby with a broken hip, fractured shoulder and severe facial swelling.

Le Phuoc Loc of an emergency rescue team that brought Doan in said motorbikes were scattered across the street and sidewalk when they arrived.

A Jeep had smashed through a median and struck multiple vehicles in the opposite direction over a distance of 100 meters, and a motorbike had been dragged several dozen meters under it, he said.

"When we reached the scene the two women were unresponsive, had no pulse and had massive blood loss from severe injuries."

A city Traffic Police Department official said the Jeep was at fault for crashing through the divider and causing the multiple collision.

The accident occurred at around 6:30 p.m.

The driver, a 31-year-old man, fled the scene of the accident and went to the southern Dong Thap Province on Sunday night.

But he turned himself in on Monday, and the HCMC police will escort him back to the city.

Registration details show the Jeep belongs to Lai Huu Tuong, 45, a bar owner in District 1.

But he told VnExpress on Monday that he had sold it to a man named Hoang in mid-2024 but could not complete the ownership transfer because he had used its papers as collateral for a bank loan.

Instead, he had signed a power of attorney agreement for the transaction.
