Earlier, that afternoon, he had gone to a pub in Binh Tan District with friends, left the place in his vehicle and was driving on Kinh Duong Vuong Street in Binh Tan at around 6:30 p.m.
When approaching the intersection of Sinco Street, he attempted to overtake a passenger bus when his Jeep suddenly went out of control, knocked over the steel median and entered the two-wheeler lane and struck several motorbikes from behind.

The vehicle then mounted the sidewalk, dragging one motorbike under its chassis for more than 50 meters.
A woman and her daughter, aged 72 and 50, died at the scene, and a man aged 30 was seriously injured.
Several motorbikes were damaged.
He panicked and fled the scene, asking a friend to pick him up.
That night he went to the southern Dong Thap Province.
Learning from news reports that the crash had resulted in deaths, he turned himself in the next morning at a police station in Dong Thap.
On Monday HCMC police traveled to Dong Thap and brought him back for questioning.
Initial tests indicated the 31-year-old had not taken drugs but the police have yet to find out if he had consumed alcohol before the crash.
The deceased women were residents of Tan Binh District and were on their way to visit relatives in Binh Tan.
The injured man, Tran Chanh Doan, is in Trieu An Hospital and now in stable condition.
From his hospital bed, he said on Monday he "was thrown almost two meters into the air and hit the ground unconscious."
The Jeep's front is severely damaged, the front axle broken and one wheel flew clear of it.
Debris and skid marks stretched nearly 100 meters on the road.
