Authorities said on Thursday that the passenger, who was seated in 11A, survived the fiery crash and is now receiving treatment at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital.
The man, identified as 40-year-old Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, came to India to visit his family, before getting on the Air India flight to return to the U.K. with his brother Ajay Kumar Ramesh, The Hindustan Times reported.
"We found a survivor, a passenger in seat 11A. The individual is currently hospitalized," said G.S. Malik, Ahmedabad’s police commissioner, ANI reported.
Footage revealed by Indian media showed a man in a white shirt, seemingly Vishwash, walking near the site of the plane crash.
"The plane exploded. They're inside," the man said upon being asked about the fate of the other passengers on the flight.
"There was a large noise around 30 seconds after the plane took off, and then it tumbled down the ground. Everything happened so fast. When I woke up, bodies were all around me and I was so scared. I stood up and ran. Someone took me to the ambulance to go to the hospital," he recalled.
"I couldn't find my brother. Please help me find Ajay," he added.
The London-bound flight, carrying 242 passengers and crew, went down shortly after takeoff on Thursday afternoon, slamming into a densely populated residential area. As of the evening, police reported recovering 204 bodies from the wreckage. At least 41 people, both passengers and local residents, are being treated for injuries.
Rescue teams have been working around the clock, sifting through debris-strewn rooftops and charred homes. Authorities say the full death toll may still rise as search efforts continue.
According to Air India and local officials, the aircraft was carrying 217 adults, 11 children, and two infants. Among the passengers were 169 Indian nationals, 53 British citizens, seven Portuguese, and one Canadian, Reuters reported.
