The land clearance is crucial to prevent further delays the project, the district authorities have announced.
According to the district People’s Committee, there are 112 households impacted by the land acquisition for the construction of Metro Line No. 2 in the district. As of now, 111 of these cases have been resolved, with compensation provided and land handed over to the project investors for relocation and infrastructure development.
However, one household at 356 Cach Mang Thang Tam, Ward 10, has yet to agree to the compensation plan and has not handed over its 46.23 square meters of land, according to Voice of Vietnam (VOV).
Despite repeated efforts by local government officials and community organizations to reach an agreement, the continued delay is hindering the overall progress of the metro project and causing negative impacts on the community and society.
As a result, the district has decided to proceed with land confiscation as per the plan, ensuring that the land is handed over to the investors by Dec. 15, as reported by Tuoi Tre.
The enforcement process will be conducted transparently and in strict compliance with the law, ensuring the legal rights of the affected household, the district said.
HCMC authorities recently announced that the state budget will now fund the second metro line, replacing the initial plan to use foreign loans.
Originally, the project was intended to be funded through official development assistance (ODA) loans from the German Reconstruction Bank (KfW), the European Investment Bank, and the Asian Development Bank. However, a recent report from the Management Authority for Urban Railways (MAUR) revealed that securing financing has been challenging due to changes in loan conditions from international lenders.
The Ben Thanh - Tham Luong metro project is estimated to cost nearly VND47.9 trillion (US$1.8 billion) and will span over 11 kilometers, with more than 9 kilometers of the route underground and the remaining section elevated.
The line will pass through six districts: District 1, District 3, District 10, District 12, Tan Binh, and Tan Phu, connecting the city center to the northwest gateway. Although the project was approved over a decade ago, it has undergone several adjustments and is now expected to be completed by 2030.
The first metro line, Ben Thanh - Suoi Tien, is scheduled to begin passenger service on Dec. 22.
