A driver in Hanoi was fined VND1 million ($40) for letting a 7-year-old boy sit in the trunk of a car while driving on a highway.

Traffic police on Thursday fined Vuong Van Quyet, 39, for carrying the boy in the trunk. At 10:30 a.m., while patrolling Mai Son-National Highway 45 running through the central province of Thanh Hoa, the police found Quyet driving a car with a boy in the trunk.

The team stopped the vehicle, and the boy was reportedly tired, with his hands grasping tightly to the car.

Quyet said he was driving a 6-person family, including three children, from Hanoi to Sam Son as tourists. When they reached the Big C Hanoi supermarket, he stopped the car to let people rest. A 7-year-old in the group asked to sit in the trunk "for comfort" and Quyet agreed.

The car then traveled across over 150 km through numerous highways, before it was stopped at the Dong Xuan intersection in Thanh Hoa.

Quyet confessed to the crime. Besides the fine, his driving license was revoked for two months.
