Tran Thi Thu Thanh, 37, was driving a four-seater on Nguyen Van Troi Street in the beach city around 9:15 p.m. on Thursday when she collided with a garbage cart being pushed by sanitary worker Nguyen Thi Phuong, 44, in the same direction.
The car continued to reach the intersection with Hung Vuong Street, hitting motorcyclist Bui Xuan Thao, 44, who was carrying a 13-year-old boy on the back seat.
Not stopping there, the car sped to the red-light area at the intersection of Nguyen Van Troi - Ba Trieu - Le Lai - Le Quy Don, colliding with two other motorcycles traveling in the same direction.
Then, the car dragged a motorcycle under its chassis towards Le Quy Don Street, where it hit another motorcycle carrying Le Thi Nhu Tien, 43, and Tien’s mother Phan Thi Su, 73, who were waiting at the red light.
The car pushed the motorcycle and the victims onto the sidewalk on Le Quy Don before hitting another motorcycle and a parked car. Both Su and Tien were confirmed dead at the site shortly after the crash.
The series of collisions only stopped after the car crashed into an electric pole.
Another five victims were rushed to hospital with multiple injuries, including broken legs. Four motorcycles and two cars were damaged.
The total distance of the car's collisions spanned nearly 500 meters long, according to the police.
In a statement sent to relevant agencies on Friday morning, Vung Tau City authorities confirmed that driver Thanh had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.503 mg per liter of breath. She could not produce a driving license and the car belongs to another person.
Thanh has been arrested facing charges of traffic violations.
