A car driver who tested with alcohol in his blood crashed into multiple vehicles in Hanoi on Wednesday night, killing one person and injuring several others.

The car suddenly accelerated and struck four motorbikes and two parked cars on Nguyen Trac Street at around 8:15 p.m., according to police reports.

The impact killed a fruit vendor standing at the scene.

Several other street vendors also sustained bruises and bleeding injuries.

At the crash site, multiple vehicles were left in disarray. One car was overturned, a pickup truck was heavily dented, and debris was scattered across the road. Two motorbikes were struck more than 100 meters apart.

A car crash is captured by surveillance camera from the ground floor of Parkview Residence apartment building in Hanoi, July 16, 2025.

Many witnesses reported hearing a series of loud crashing sounds.

Tran Manh Bao, a security guard at a nearby apartment building, said that when he rushed outside, he saw a man and two children lying motionless on the road.

"I saw a man stepping out of the white car, standing frozen. I asked if he had been drinking, but the driver didn't answer," Bao said.

Another witness reported that the vehicle, bearing license plate 30K-730.12, only came to a stop after colliding with the two parked cars.

"I saw a child on the ground still moving, so I quickly called a taxi to take them to the hospital," the witness said.

Police identified the driver as Le Minh Giap, born in 1984 and a college lecturer in Hanoi.

A breathalyzer test showed a blood alcohol concentration of 0.861 mg/liter of breath.
