A man has been fined VND17 million (US$730) and had his license revoked for driving on the wrong side on the Dau Giay – Phan Thiet Expressway.

The 45-year-old man, who has not been identified, told the traffic police he had been "lost" while on his way to the south-central Binh Thuan Province from Dong Nai Province near Ho Chi Minh City on Wednesday.

The dash cam of a passenger bus driving on the expressway had caught him driving on the wrong side at 100 kph, the police said Thursday night.

The dash cam of a passenger bus driving on Dau Giay – Phan Thiet Expressway catches a car moving on the wrong direction.

The Dau Giay – Phan Thiet Expressway, which runs 99 km through Dong Nai and Binh Thuan provinces, opened to traffic on April 29.

Thanks to the expressway, which also links up with the HCMC – Long Thanh – Dau Giay Expressway between HCMC and Dong Nai, it now takes around two hours to travel by car from HCMC to Phan Thiet, which is known for its beaches and sand dunes.

The trip used to take five hours before the expressway was built.

There are only three intersections now for drivers to enter and exit the expressway.

Four others are still under construction.
