A 31-year-old man has turned himself in, admitting he was the driver of a Jeep that crashed into multiple motorbikes in Ho Chi Minh City on Sunday evening, killing two women and seriously injuring a man.

The man, whose identity has not been fully disclosed, surrendered at a police station in the southern Dong Thap Province. Police from HCMC traveled to Dong Thap on Monday afternoon to escort him back for further investigation.

He told authorities that he fled the scene because he was "too scared to stay," and left for Dong Thap later that night.

The fatal crash occurred at around 6:30 p.m. on Kinh Duong Vuong Street in Binh Tan District. As the Jeep approached an intersection, it veered off course, broke through the median strip, and plowed into a line of motorbikes traveling in the same direction.

One of the car's wheels was reportedly thrown nearly 50 meters from the point of impact. One motorbike was dragged more than 50 meters and became lodged under the vehicle.

The Jeep sustained extensive damage, including a broken front axle and a detached wheel. At least three motorbikes were severely damaged, with debris scattered across the roadway and a 100-meter gouge marking the surface. A concrete base of a sidewalk electrical box was also destroyed.

A 50-year-old woman and her 72-year-old mother, who were riding the same motorbike, died at the scene. A seriously injured man was taken to hospital by local residents. His condition has since stabilized.

Investigators traced the vehicle using registration details found at the scene.

Registration details show the Jeep belongs to Lai Huu Tuong, 45, a bar owner in District 1.

But he told VnExpress on Monday that he had sold it to a man named Hoang in mid-2024 but could not complete the ownership transfer because he had used its papers as collateral for a bank loan.

Instead, he had signed a power of attorney agreement for the transaction.
