A car driver attempting to evade police caused a multi-vehicle crash in Cu Chi District in Ho Chi Minh City's outskirts on Thursday night.

The incident occurred around 9:00 p.m. when a man in a five-seat car, traveling on National Highway No. 22 from Tay Ninh Province that borders Cambodia, refused to stop for a routine check by authorities.

As the driver sped away, he turned onto another lane in an effort to escape.

However, heavy traffic ahead and behind him left him with limited options.

In a bizarre attempt to evade capture, the driver reversed several times before accelerating forward, colliding with seven other vehicles, including a truck, a container truck, a passenger bus, and four smaller cars. The car ultimately crashed into a concrete median strip that separates the motorbike lane.

Witnesses recorded the scene, showing the aftermath of the crash with debris scattered across the road.

Kim Xuan, a passenger in one of the affected trucks, described the chaos: "The runaway car damaged many vehicles around, and pieces of those vehicles were scattered on the road."

Police and local militia quickly surrounded the area. Officers smashed the car doors to apprehend the driver, although he managed to flee the scene. The entire episode lasted more than four minutes.

Pham Van Binh, Chairman of Tan Phu Trung Commune of Cu Chi District, said the car was initially stopped due to suspicions of transporting contraband cigarettes.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but the incident caused significant traffic delays in the area.

Police have since arrested one individual from the vehicle, but the driver remains at large.
