A motorbike rider who was on the phone in central Vietnam narrowly avoided a crash when a parked car's door suddenly swung open into his path, a split-second moment captured on video and shared online this week.

The incident happened on Dec. 14 on Ly Thuong Kiet Street in Nghe An Province. In the footage, the motorbike rider is traveling close to the curbside lane where cars are stopped, while holding a phone. As he passes a parked vehicle, the door opens abruptly, forcing his bike to lurch out into the roadway. He appears to stay upright, avoiding a fall.

Traffic safety experts often warn that this kind of "dooring" risk rises on streets where vehicles frequently stop along the right edge of the road. The simplest defenses are boring-but-effective: riders should avoid hugging the parked-car line, and drivers (and passengers) should check mirrors and blind spots before opening a door, ideally cracking it slightly first and scanning for oncoming traffic.

Vietnam’s current traffic rules also attach significant penalties to both behaviors seen in the clip. Motorbike riders who hold and use a phone while driving can be fined VND800,000 to VND1 million (US$30-38) and face a 4-point deduction on their license's 12 points. If the violation contributes to a traffic accident, the fine can rise to VND10-14 million with a 10-point deduction.

For car occupants, opening a door unsafely is also explicitly penalized: VND4 million to VND6 million for opening/keeping a door open in a way that endangers others, and VND20 million to VND22 million if it leads to an accident.
