To prepare for its operational launch in mid-2026, Long Thanh International Airport will conduct calibration flights starting on Sept. 26.

Calibration flights are used to test and ensure the accuracy and safety of all airport systems before opening.

The Civil Aviation Authority, Vietnam Air Traffic Management Corporation (VATM), and Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) will oversee the 10-day process, using Beechcraft B300 aircraft, also known as King Air B300, which is a high-speed propeller aircraft used for business, medical, and surveillance flights.

The calibration will include simulated takeoffs and landings at various altitudes and angles to test systems such as the ILS/DME (precision landing system), PAPI (landing lights), ALS (approach lighting system), and PSR/SSR/ADS-B radar.

Test flights will depart 40 km away from Tan Son Nhat Airport in Ho Chi Minh City, passing through Long Thanh airspace. To minimize disruption to commercial flights, most activities will occur during the night or early morning. In some cases, flights may operate overnight to ensure the accuracy of results and maintain safety.

Earlier in August, VATM and ACV performed a test flight using a Beechcraft King Air 350ER. The data from that flight will inform the upcoming calibration tests.

Long Thanh Airport is being built with a total investment of nearly VND 337 trillion to become Vietnam's largest, covering 5,000 hectares. Runway No. 1 and the taxiway system are completed, while the passenger terminal is set to finish the roof and glass installation within this month. The air traffic control tower and other operational buildings are nearing completion.

Nearly 14,000 workers and engineers are working to complete the airport by late 2025.
