The accident occurred at around 10:50 a.m. on Friday when Ngo Van Hoa, 50, a Da Nang resident, was driving his family along the La Son–Hoa Lien Expressway.
The vehicle was carrying his son, daughter-in-law and infant grandson when Hoa reportedly dozed off. As the car reached Khe Tre Commune in Hue City, it veered into the concrete median dividing the roadway.
The crash happened on a two-lane section of the expressway that is currently under expansion by a licensed contractor. The impact severely damaged the front of the vehicle.
Hoa suffered a minor eye injury, while his daughter-in-law, Tran Thi Diem Huong, 20, was injured in the arm. The baby, Ngo Minh Quan, was rushed to the hospital in a coma but later died.
Hoa’s son was not injured. Authorities were dispatched to the scene to direct traffic, conduct a site examination and investigate the cause of the crash. Hoa told investigators he had fallen asleep at the wheel after driving for a long distance.
