A 19-ton truck carrying 30 tons of bricks drove onto a bridge with a maximum capacity of just five tons in the Mekong Delta's An Giang Province on Wednesday, causing a bridge section to collapse.

The incident occurred at around 7 a.m. as the truck crossed the T6 bridge in Tri Ton District.

As the bridge gave way under the weight of the truck, part of the vehicle fell into the stream below, but the driver, 28-year-old Doan Duc Vinh, managed to escape without injury.

Authorities later confirmed that the truck itself weighed 19 tons, and with its load of 30 tons of bricks, it far exceeded the bridge's maximum capacity of just five tons.

Nguyen Van Be Tam, chairman of the Tri Ton District People’s Committee, said that local authorities were working to recover the truck and clear the wreckage. Traffic has been diverted to alternative routes.

The T6 bridge has been in operation for several decades.
