Nearly 160 people were killed in 17,345 road accidents during the first four days of Tet (Lunar New Year), starting January 29.

The number of traffic accidents downed 15 percent over the same period last year.

Vietnam celebrated the Lunar New Year with a nine-day break. The holiday is the biggest in the country and involves a lot of traveling and parties.

The main reasons for the casualties included driving under the influence and not wearing helmets, according to the National Traffic Safety Committee.

Road crashes are a leading cause of death in Vietnam, said the committee.
