A 2-year-old girl in Ho Chi Minh City-adjacent Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province drowned when she fell into a water bucket, having been left alone by a teacher in the southern province.

Con Dao District Police on Thursday put Le Thi Yen Hong, the 30-year-old kindergarten teacher in question, under investigation for involuntary manslaughter due to "misconduct in professional practice or administrative rules."

Hong often babysits children on the weekends, but she has not officially registered with authorities to do so.

On April 29, while taking care of a 2-year-old girl, Hong let the child hold onto a water bucket that was 50 cm tall, containing an amount of water that was 15 cm deep. Hong then left the girl to retrieve clothes from another room.

Once there, the teacher forgot to return to the girl because she got distracted speaking with her mother instead.

After around 5-7 minutes, a student ran in and told Hong that the 2-year-old girl had fallen head-first into the water bucket. When Hong and her mother arrived, the girl's face, nose and mouth were fully submerged in the water and she had already drowned.
